A Thank-You To My Parents On Thanksgiving

Today on my main blog, I wrote a list of 50 things I am thankful for. While there are obviously more than 50 things I’m grateful for, writing down more than 50 makes for a reallllllly long post! Anyways, one of the most important things on that list was my parents.

I really do owe most of my self-reliance to my parents. Because of their investment in me while I relied on them, I am now able to be quite independent and self-reliant.

They pushed me to do things I thought I couldn’t do, they helped me learn how to figure things out, they helped me learn how to learn, they urged me to keep doing when I wanted to give up, and they modeled independence for me.

When I am tempted to take the easy road by doing things for my kids instead of making them do it themselves, by telling them the answer to their questions instead of making them dig for the answer themselves, and by not pushing them to keep going when they want to quit, I remind myself of my parents and what a favor they did for me by teaching me to be independent.

So, I’m thankful for them. Because oddly enough, I think one of the best ways to learn self-reliance is to have someone else teach you.
